Chevron
Designs Engineering Intern | Summer 2021 | El Segundo, CA
My second internship during my undergraduate tenure was at Chevron's El Segundo Refinery in Southern California. In contrast to my previous internship, my work at Chevron was centered around larger, profitability-driven projects. As a part of the designs engineering team, I was responsible for the day-to-day operation and optimization of equipment within several of the plant's hydrotreating units. The 'capstone' project for my internship involved scoping and designing a mile-long drainage diversion pipeline, leading to potential operating cost savings of $240,000 per year. I was able to apply knowledge in heat transfer and fluid dynamics to reduce the need for chemical cooling during the wastewater treatment process my proposed pipeline was centered around. It served as an interdisciplinary start-to-finish design experience, allowing me to work with chemical engineers, operators, and cost estimators. Additionally, I used pipe stress FEA software (CAESAR II) to ensure potential thermal expansion and pipe vibration were within safety standards.
To increase my breadth of experience during my internship, I helped redesign several truck and rail loading rack safety systems to mitigate potential injuries to operators and comply with updated OSHA fall protection standards. Completing the redesign in-house allowed the company to save thousands of dollars that would typically be spent on contracting the work out.
